International Travel
If you are traveling abroad, international travel services are available to current ISU students, faculty, staff, consultants and contractors as well as their spouses and domestic partners. The Thielen Student Health Center has on its staff two health care professionals certified in travel health.
The TSHC staff will provide you with the latest Centers for Disease Control travel recommendations, along with medications and vaccinations, for your destination.
As soon as you commit to your travel plans you should call to make an appointment! Pick up a travelers form at the appointment desk, or download the online travel form here. You must call for an appointment well in advance of your departure date. Recommended time is 6-8 weeks. Keep in mind that you will not be vaccinated fully if you choose to wait or schedule your appointment within a shorter time than six weeks.
The cost of international travel visit to the travel clinic is based on several factors:
- The level of risk factors for the country of countries to be visited.
- The number of recommended and routine vaccinations needed.
- Whether or not malaria medication is necessary for the trip.
All countries are divided into three levels depending on their risk levels. Area 1 has a low risk of disease from food, water, and insects. Area 2 has a moderate risk. Area 3 has a high risk. A travel update from the CDC, which we update daily, can show you the risk level for you destination. The cost for personalized information for a traveler varies between the areas depending on risk level.
A representative from the Travel Clinic is available for group presentations. There is no charge for the service.
Vaccines are divided into three groups: required, recommended, and routine. At this time only Yellow Fever is categorized as a required vaccination for some areas of travel. The Thielen Student Health Center is a yellow fever center. There may be between zero to fifteen vaccinations needed depending on the traveler's area of travel, length of stay and activities while there.
Costs involved for all Travel Clinic services, including vaccines, will be filed to your insurance, provided we have your insurance information on file. However, this is not a guarantee that your insurance will covers these charges. Travelers are strongly advised to contact their insurance provider regarding potential charges for travel immunizations prior to a Travel Clinic visit.
For questions, please contact the Thielen Student Health Center at 515.294-5801 and ask to speak to the Travel Clinic.
