Prevention Services: Creating a Safer Adventure
The Prevention Services department provides campus-wide leadership for a comprehensive approach to reduce health risks for students. In collaboration with our campus and community partners, we strive to foster a healthy campus environment and support the academic success of our students.
Health issues that are focused on include high-risk drinking, sexual and interpersonal violence, and general healthy lifestyle habits. We use the Environmental Management approach and the 3-in-1 Framework to inform our decisions and guide our efforts for maximum impact.
Environmental Management
Environmental management seeks to bring about behavior change through multiple channels, both promoting positive behaviors and norms and also discouraging high-risk behaviors. It encompasses a range of activities, including:
- Environmental change including policy changes at both the campus and community level
- Early intervention programs aimed at students displaying signs of distress
- Awareness activities for groups known to be at higher risk for engaging in problem behaviors
- Health protection programs that aim to minimize the harm incurred by problem behavior.
3-in-1 Framework
The 3-in-1 Framework is based upon over ten years of research, conducted by the US Department of Education's Higher Education Center (HEC). It notes that successful interventions for health behaviors occur at three distinct levels, noted to the left.

That’s why Iowa State has joined together with many top schools in the country in adopting “AlcoholEdu for College.” The required online program will teach students tips to stay safe while having fun on campus.
Unless There’s Consent _ Sexual Misconduct Risk Reduction
Creating a respectful, safe and non-threatening environment is the responsibility of all members of the university community! “Unless There’s Consent" is a sexual misconduct prevention program that aims to reduce sexual misconduct by raising awareness about sexual misconduct. “Unless There’s Consent" is endorsed by the Department of Justice Office of Violence Against Women. The program is made up of 14 videos that utilize survivor stories, real life scenarios, and provide bystander skills so that students can recognize or help a friend in sexually aggressive situations.

Group Facilitation and Presentation Assistance Available to Your Group
Mentors in Violence Prevention
Mentors in Violence Prevention (MVP) is focused on an innovative "bystander" model that empowers each student to take an active role in promoting a positive school climate. The heart of the training consists of role-plays intended to allow students to construct and practice viable options in response to incidents of harassment, abuse, or violence before, during, or after the fact.
MVP is an interactive discussion in single-sex and mixed-gender classes and workshops. The facilitator uses real-life scenarios that speak to the social life experiences of young men and women in college.

Alcohol Risk Reduction
Alcohol risk reduction presentations are modeled after a research-based, theory driven program, which is part of a comprehensive alcohol prevention program created at the University of Houston. This presentation engages students using motivational interviewing along with social norms, behavioral intentions, how to help a friend with alcohol poisoning, and goal setting around alcohol use.
